Dispatches from UK Architects Declare: Michael Pawlyn

February 2024

Architects Declare has been a parallel project for Michael Pawlyn, alongside writing Flourish with Sarah Ichioka. It has been a great opportunity to put into practice many of the things we talk about in the book: seeking to maximise our agency, encouraging the shift towards regenerative design and taking inspiration from Donella Meadows on how to change systems. Architects Declare has just launched a new initiative in partnership with Architecture Today: The Regenerative Architecture Index

London of the Future

A vision of a regenerative London, written by "Flourish" co-author Sarah Ichioka, has been featured in the London Society's recent book "London of the Future" (Merrill Publishers). The proposals in "London of the Future" aim to predict and prescribe how the UK capital might be governed, organized, and designed in years to come and to provoke debate among planners, architects, and developers not only in London but in all major cities throughout the world. Over the course of eighteen essays, experts in various fields - urbanism, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, futurology, journalism, and more - examine possibilities for reimagining and improving many aspects of the city. These writers consider changes both radical and minor that could shape London into a more resilient city and a fairer, healthier place to live. The ideas explored in Sarah's essay reflect concepts co-developed with Michael Pawlyn for "Flourish". Get your copy!

Sarah Ichioka speaks to Fabian Clavier on the Cities in Mind Podcast about the power of regenerative design and what it means for cities across Asia.

“The quest for sustainability has moved society forward in important ways, but we believe it is now time to embrace a new regenerative approach to design and development. As a globalized society, we urgently need to reach the turning point in human civilization where everything we do has a net positive impact on the environment. We contend that this is a transformation that is within our reach. It is time to shift from merely mitigating negatives to optimizing positives.” Sarah Ichioka & Michael Pawlyn

The impact of climate change—including extreme heat, severe storms, sea rise, pollution and drought—is being felt globally. To protect our planet, and meet government targets, we must act now. The architecture and construction industry must set bold, ambitious, and achievable targets to reduce our environmental impact. These goals must be underpinned by science, creativity, and new approaches to design.

Organised by Perkins & Will this series brings together panellists with diverse perspectives and insights—architects, economists, researchers, academics, and governmental advocates—to discuss the challenges we face and potential solutions that we can turn to.
